Afrolusamerica is the collective noun for regions the Portuguese had occupied in Africa and South America after discovering the Cape Verdian Islands around 1490, and lost again many centuries later. It is an area connected by a mutual language. As much as history and fate of the African nations and the Afrobrazilians may differ, there are, indeed, cross connections in their past and present uniting Africans and Brazilians - sometimes via Portugal. This does not only relate to music but also to lingual and ritual spheres. - Claus Schreiner
Adventures in Afropea 3
Telling Stories to the Sea
Compiled by David Byrne and Yale Evelev
This is the first compilation to represent the different branches of Afro-Portuguese music. The best from Lisbon, Angola, São Tomé, and the Cape Verde Islands. Faraway outposts united by bittersweet sadness and rugged soul, tempered by a uniquely tropical funk, where moody melodies float above dreamy grooves. Here is the archetype of all Afro-Atlantic music - American blues, Brazilian sambas, Cuban rhumbas. These songs simultaneously pierce the heart and inspire release. They're both the illness and the cure.
